2007 Heritage Tour - Evergreen Cemetery Preservation Kick-Off

Evergreen Cemetery Preservation Kick-Off for 2007

The Project RESPECT 2007 Preservation Kickoff Program at Evergreen Negro Cemetery has been rescheduled due to the inclement weather forecast for the original April weekend. All associated activities for the Kickoff Program have been moved to May 26, 2007 at Evergreen Negro Cemetery.

Preservation awareness and Cultural Heritage programming are important components of our activities planned for this calendar year. We hope everyone will join us on Saturday, May 26, 2007 for informative seminars, entertainment, tours, good eating, and a fun-filled day. We especially hope to see you on May 26.

We're working with Keep Texas Beautiful to extend our cleanup efforts to the near neighborhood around the cemetery on this day. We will have around 100 workers at the cemetery property from
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Our regular participants from the Houston Geological Society, HRA Gray and Pape, the Prairie View A & M Cooperative Extension Service, and other neighborhood organizations will also be on hand. We want to begin this year's work with an open invitation to all the neighborhood organizations in the Houston Area and especially those organizations associated with the Greater 5th Ward Communities. Our idea is to provide an opportunity for everyone to come
out and volunteer their service in a day of cleanup work around the cemetery and the immediate neighborhood - and just have some fun!

We are requesting the presence and participation of persons from the Mayor's Staff, City of Houston Council and other organizations on this day.

The Evergreen Negro Cemetery is located on the corner of Lockwood Drive and Market Street.  The Street Address for Mapquest or other lookups is 3900 Market Street. From IH-10 East, take the second exit past downtown Houston, that's Lockwood Drive. At the intersection and signal light on the access road turn right on to Lockwood Dr. The cemetery is in the first block on both sides of the street. At the next light, Market Street turn left. We will have banners and signs up on that
day. Please join us any time beginning at 7:30 am.
