The maintenance and repairs performed at the Evergreen Negro Cemetery on Juneteenth by employees of Siemens Corporation was continued on July 31, 2010 with a follow-up visit by Siemens. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity joined the Siemens workers to implement two preservation and community improvement projects. The event was hosted by Project RESPECT with all the provisions being provided on that day by Siemans.
1) Siemens Corporation - Focused all their preservation labor on Rebuilding and Construction of the Picket Fence on Market Street at Calles Street - the west side of the Cemetery.
2) Omega Psi Phi Fraternity - Provided labor to accomplish the regular grounds maintenance, removal of fallen trees, mowing, trimming around markers and monument.
The interim fencing is important to prevent any further vehicular intrusion or damage to the sensitive artifacts, markers, and monuments of the historic Evergreen Negro Cemetery. Project RESPECT's court-approved long-term Preservation Management Plan is seeking funds to replace the wooden fence with a wrought-iron fence.
SIEMENS Corporation is underwriting and providing breakfast snacks, and a catered barbecue lunch for the event of the day. Our thanks to Mr. Matt McAdamis for the ongoing planning and work with Project RESPECT necessary to make this day of preservation and cultural activities a reality. Please call or register on our Web Site if you desire to donate and/or join us for a community cultural event.
